My WHY

My driving force, my "why," is simple and unwavering: my students. I am on a mission to instill in them the essence of lifelong learning and equip them to authentically prove their understanding. I firmly believe that as educators, we are duty-bound to challenge the status quo, take risks, and genuinely prepare our students for their future. Our responsibility extends beyond sticking with the traditional model that has been used for over 200 years, it is about empowering students to think critically, solve real-world problems, and emerge as creative, innovative thinkers all while being engaged and having fun!

From the beginning, my aim has been to dismantle traditional practices in favor of a competency-based approach. At Quest Jr., our focus is on ensuring that students master standards—comprehending not just the "what" but also the "how" and "why" of their learning process. My goal years ago was to create a learning environment where students are intrinsically motivated, devoid of external incentives like bribes, extra credit, or points. It's about designing a culture where students engage in study and practice not merely to accumulate points but to truly grasp the art of learning. I want them to understand how to learn!

Reflecting back twenty years, my teaching philosophy crystallized during my first year as a 1st-grade teacher. Faced with a diverse range of skill levels among students, such as some students entering my classroom reading chapter books, while others could not recognize letters or sounds.  I felt compelled to personalize their learning experiences. I needed to figure out a way to meet ALL of my students' needs, which meant I needed to be creative in my teaching approach.  I needed to remove myself from the front of the classroom in order to personalize my teachings per student.  I ventured beyond the conventional curriculum. My goal was clear: meet individual needs rather than conform to a one-size-fits-all approach. This philosophy of education, placing the child at the center, became my guiding principle.

Fast forward to my role as the principal of Quest Jr. High 7 years ago, and I encountered a similar need for transformation. The grading system was entrenched in a "game," classrooms were teacher-centric, and differentiation was scarce. The realization struck that the traditional model was failing students. Despite high-grade averages, student dissatisfaction was obvious, engagement was lacking, and individual learning gaps persisted.

Drawing on my early teaching experiences, I asked a pivotal question: "Could I run a Jr. high school like I ran my elementary classroom?" The challenge was to shift away from the traditional grading system and establish a student-driven, mastery-based approach. The transformation required convincing teachers to adopt small group instruction, collaborative learning, and data-driven instruction. The motive behind this shift was crystal clear—our students deserve better!

With a united front, the staff at Quest Jr. High embarked on the challenge of breaking away from traditional grading in favor of a mastery/competency approach. Our motto became "Every student, every day, whatever it takes." The goal was not just academic success but ensuring that every student comprehends “how” to learn and recognizes the importance of learning.

Our journey at Quest Jr. High has been one of continuous self-reflection, assessment, and growth. Weekly meetings over the last seven school years have provided a platform for collective progress through trial and error, problem-solving, and uncomfortable discussions. Every question and decision have been centered around what is best for our students' success in learning.

I am passionate about my job. I am committed to the cause of transformation, growth, and creating a learning environment where every student thrives. My journey the last 23 years is a testament to the power of putting students at the forefront, valuing progress over perfection, and persistently striving for excellence. Every student, every day, whatever it takes. This is not just a motto; it is a commitment to the future of our learners.

I love my job—Nicki Slaugh
